1 . Sambhaji Maharaj grew up with both Saastra gyaan (knowledge of scriptures) and Shastra gyaan (knowledge of weapons).
Sambhaji Maharaj was a scholar of Sanskrit and eight other languages including Portuguese. He wrote several books including a highly prestigious Sanskrit book “Budh bhushanam”.
2. Political hostage At age of 9.
Sambhaji Maharaj was sent to live with Raja Jai Singh of Amber, as a political hostage to ensure compliance of the Treaty of Purandar that Shivaji had signed with the Mughals on 11 June 1665.
3. Sambhaji Maharaj was married to Jivubai (Yesubai) in a marriage of political alliance.
Jivubai (Yesubai) was the daughter of Pilajirao Shirke. This marriage, thus gave Shivaji Maharaj access to the Konkan coastal belt.
4. Sambhaji Maharaj single handedly fought with the massive army of Aurangzeb for 9 years.
Aurangzeb’s army was 10 times larger than Sambhaji’s Army and his Mughal empire was 20 times bigger than Sambhaji’s. However, Sambhaji led the fight valiantly and did not let Aurangzeb win even a single major victory.

5. Aurangzeb was stuck in battles in Maharashtra for 27 years.
Sambhaji Maharaj and other Maratha soldiers defeated several Mughal leaders in the battlefield and because this, Aurangzeb remained engaged in battles in Maharashtra for 27 years, thus Sambhaji Maharaj kept Aurangzeb away from North India for 27 years.
6. Unbeatable Sambhaji Maharaj:
Sambhaji Maharaj fought around 130 battles but remained unbeaten in all of these.
Sambhaji Maharaj called his commanders for a strategic meeting at Sangameshwar in Konkan. Ganoji Shirke (brother of Sambhaji’s wife Yesubai) informed Aurangzeb’s general that Sambhaji and his adviser Kavi Kalash were on their way to a meeting from a secret path.
This is how Aurangzeb managed to imprison Sambhaji.
8. Sambhaji Maharaj’s death was a brutal one.
The captured Sambhaji and Kavi Kalash were taken to Bahadurgad whereAurangzeb ordered Sambhaji and Kavi Kalash to be tortured to death; the process took over a fortnight and included plucking out their eyes and tongue, pulling out their nails and removing their skin.
Sambhaji Maharaj was finally killed on 11 March 1689.
9. Dharmaveer (Protector of the Religion) Sambhaji Maharaj.
Despite the brutal torture, Sambhaji Maharaj did not even once plead for mercy from emperor Aurangzeb and refused to answer anything that Aurangzeb asked. By doing so he earned the title of Dharmaveer (Protector of the Religion).
