Torna Fort : All About Torna Fort History and Torna Fort Trek

The Torna Fort situated in the southwest of the Pune district of the western part of the Maharashtra. It is the highest fort in Pune district and offers some spectacular views of the Sahyadri mountains. The Raigad, Lingana, Rajgad, Purandar fort, Sinhagad are seen from Torna.

Torna Fort was the first fort captured by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1646, at the age of 16, forming the nucleus of the Maratha Empire.

Torna Fort, also known as Prachandagad. The name derives from Prachanda (Marathi for huge or massive) and gad (Marathi for fort). Chatrapati Shivaji renamed the fort ‘ ‘Prachandagad’ ‘ as Torna, and constructed several monuments and towers within it.

Historical Importance

Torna Fort is historically significant because it was the first fort captured by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1646, at the age of 16, forming the nucleus of the Maratha Empire. This fort is believed to have been constructed by the Shaiva Panth, in the 13th century.

In the 18th century, the Mughal empire gained control of this fort after death of Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. It was returned to the Marathas after a doctrine was signed by the Peshwas and the Mughals.

Torna Fort is a most popular destination for trekkers specially during the winter season, from September to December. Torna Fort trek is NOT recommended during the rainy season as the route gets slippery at certain points due to the flow on the path.

The trek route is simple but lengthy and it takes around 3 hours of trekking time to get to the top from the base.

Locals sell food products along the trek. You can get Maggi,Kanda Bhaji , Pitla Bhakri and water bottles at tip of the Torna Fort. The Mengai temple is a good place for staying inside the fort.

Note: Non-Vegetarian food, Partying including alcoholic beverages and smoking is banned on the fort.

How To Reach Torna Fort

The Torna fort is about 50 km from Pune.

By Bus: Velhe is the base village and there are buses that run from Swargate to Velhe.

By Car: One can go from Pune via Satara road and take right at Nasarapur village and travel 30 kms to reach the village Velhe.

By Train: Nearest railway station is Pune.
